This entire section of this scene illustrates that immediately upon the death of Edward IV, the citizens intuitively know that danger is coming. As the scene unfolds, the citizens realize that the next in line to be king is Edward IV’s son, Richard, the Duke of York, referred to as York in this edition of the play. Upon this realization, the Third Citizen states, â€Å"Woe to that land that’s governed by a child,† lamenting his country because, as he sees it, York is too young to rule (2.3.11). Due to this statement, a debate about Henry XI ensues. The Second Citizen argues that the country may not be doomed, seeing as York’s council can rule until he is old enough to take over (2.3.12-15). The First Citizen agrees because â€Å"So stood the state when Henry the Sixth/ Was crowned in Paris but at nine months old† (2.3.16-17). The Third Citizen goes on to argue that this is not the only contribution to the good rule of Henry XI, but that additionally â€Å"the king/ Had virtuous uncles to protect his grace† (2.3.20-21). This historical allusion to Henry XI provides the audience with an insight of the common people. First, it shows that the common people have a vast knowledge about the world of politics. In fact, they have enough of this knowledge to think of past rulers and what made them great and apply these tactics to current or future leaders. This allows for them to formulate opinions and arguments on not only their leaders but also the state of affairs in their country. This proves that not only can the citizens know that danger is about to come to their country because of their intuition but also through their general knowledge. Additionally, this historical allusion shows how the common people view future success in court. If the ruler himself in unsuccessful, or unable to be successful yet in the case of York, the common people still have two outlets for hope that they will be ruled benevolently. The first of these hopes is the royal council, and the second of these hopes is the ruler’s family. Despite the citizens having a little bit of hope for the future, these feelings soon disappear when they think of the eminent power struggle between York’s mother, Queen Elizabeth, and her family and Richard III and his allies. The Third Citizen emphasizes this when he states â€Å"Better it were they all came by his father,/ Or by his father there were none at all† (2.3.23-24). By this, the Third Citizen means that it would be better if all of York’s uncles were on his father’s side or if he had no uncles on his father’s side because then there would not be this intense power struggle. His use of anastrophe, or sentence inversion, emphasizes the depth and wisdom of these words, seeing as if this were true, there would not be any issue with the future rulers or the future of the country. The use of anastrophe is used again when the Third Citizen states, â€Å"O, full of danger is the Duke of Gloucester [Richard]† (2.3.27). This again emphasiz es the wisdom of the common people because the Third Citizen says this from sheer intuition; however, as the audience knows, he is correct in this idea that Richard is a villain and is ill fit for the throne. The weight of this line is also emphasized through the use of an interjection, â€Å"O,† which draws attention to what is being said and stressed the impending peril that comes alongside Richard III. Much like the first part of this scene, this section demonstrates the citizens’ instinctive knowledge that peril is to come if this power struggle is to continue and if Richard III gains any power. The citizens know there is danger to come with the death of Edward IV and the resulting power struggle not because they were told but because of their general sense of knowing and intuition. In order to prove to his fellow citizens that there is a problem at hand, the Third Citizen states: When clouds are seen, wise men put on their cloaks; When great leaves fall, then winter is at hand; When the sun sets, who doth not look for night? Untimely storms makes men expect a dearth. All may be well, but if God sort it so, ‘Tis more than we deserve or I expect. (2.3.32-37) Through this use of multiple metaphors, the Third Citizen is basically saying that when there are certain signs, men should not ignore them. This is an allusion to their intuition that their country is in danger with the eminent power struggle. If all will be well as the First Citizen states, then it is more than the people expect because, at this rate, the country will be in peril. An example of this intuition can be seen when the Second Citizen states, â€Å"Truly, the hearts of men are full of fear:/ You cannot reason almost with a man/ That looks not heavily and full of dread† (2.3.38-40). Every citizen knows that something bad is about to happen, so much so that there is not a man that one can speak to who does not look â€Å"full of dread.† The Third Citizen goes on to elaborate on this intuition by saying, â€Å"By a divine instinct men’s mind mistrust/ Ensuing danger; as by proof we see/ The water swell before a boist’rous storm† (2.3.42-44). By this he means that men have intuition that tells them when danger is approaching. Through the use of a simile, he compares this knowledge to the sea swelling when a storm is about to ensue. This last section summarizes the entire tone of this scene. It is entirely focused on the citizens’ knowledge of what is happening and intuition that something dangerous is about to occur. Through the use of language in Act Two, Scene Three of â€Å"Richard III,† Shakespeare is able to illustrate that the common people of the country are able to sense danger approaching when Edward IV dies and Richard III begins his rise to power. They are able to sense this danger through their general knowledge and intuition. This can be seen when the citizens discuss the death of Edward IV, the possibility of York taking over the throne, and the power struggle ensuing between Queen Elizabeth and her family and Richard III and his allies. This knowledge and intuition finally culminates in an overall sense that the country will soon be in peril, which the audience knows to be true because of the impending reign of Richard III. This ability to see the impending danger much before it actually occurs proves that the common folk are underestimated and are much wiser than the court believes them to be.

Harvest House Through The Cce Program - 866 Words

The organization that I volunteered for was Harvest House through the CCE program. â€Å"Harvest House is an intensive rehabilitative program which provides a variety of integrated and varied life skills training for its member† (Orgsync). Harvest house is a place for both men and women with severe and chronic mental illness are able to gain community support and participate in services that focus on facilitating appropriate socialization, adaptive coping skills, improving self-confidence, and learning how to live with their mental disability. The particular activity that I participated in was receiving donated clothes from designated areas and bringing the clothes to the men and women at the Harvest House. The individuals who participate are living in severe poverty; some receiving as little as $50 a month from the Harvest House organization and having no other income. Harvest House works with both its members and professional staff who provide food to the members and set up meetings for them to interact with each other. The donated clothing that we brought to them is very helpful because it can provide things such as a winter coat, a scarf, a warm hat, or many other articles of clothing that these people would not normally be able to afford. †¢ It was interesting for me to volunteer for this organization because I was able to see how difficult life can be for people who have mental disabilities. †¢ The individuals at this organization varied greatly in the severity of their

Women today face many obstacles, but not as many obstacles as women in past years who have paved the way for today’s women. These women fought for our right to vote, to own property, to hold public office, and even rights to their own bodies. It’s hard to imagine a time when a woman got married, she gave up all control to any property to her husband. Many women lived for a long time without having a voice. There were several pioneers involved in the women’s rights movement, each moving women one step closer to equality. These women voiced their concerns over unfair treatment and stood up for change. Today’s women are still fighting for some of the same causes such as equal treatment and equal pay. It took seventy-two years from the time of the first women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls until the 19th Amendment was added to the con stitution. I personally use my right to vote because so many women before me fought so hard for me to have this right. Some women probably don’t see the basic right to vote as a big accomplishment, but I see it as a big step in the right direction. I will use my right to vote to help my voice to be heard. Another right many women have been fighting for is equal treatment. It sounds so simple when you think about it, both men and women being treated equally. The fact is something so simple is far from it. There are so many women have fought for this basic right and have been unsuccessful. In 1923 suffragist leader Alice Paul introduced the Equal Rights Amendment. This proposed amendment to the United Sates Constitution was constructed so that civil rights may not be denied on the basis of one s sex. The road to getting this amendment passed has been a rocky one. According to equalrightsamendment.org, in 1972 the Equal Rights Amendment was finally passed by Congress and sent to the states for ratification, this is the formal validation of a proposed law. A person is very different from himself when he is under the heavy influence of alcohol. Fathers who drink liquor every night are much more prone to domestic violence than a father who is not an alcoholic. Drugs such as crack, cocaine and methamphetamine make users aggressive and also cause dependence. People high on crack think that they can do anything and heavy users start experiencing paranoia (Drug Intelligence Centre n. . ). This paranoia causes the user to make a problem out of nothing and the aggressiveness of the drug initiates the violence. Drugs and alcohol do contribute heavily to domestic violence but another very big reason is self-esteem issues. A lot of domestic violence issues always have something to do with self-esteem issues. A child growing up in an environment where he is regularly beaten and put down will have psychological problems when h e/she grows up. The hidden burning anger of that child will stay inside him until he grows up. When that child, who is now a man, has a family of his own it is very likely that he will take out all his childhood frustrations on his family. This might be caused by stress or even the willingness to show power and control (All About Life Challenges n. d. ). Sometimes a family will experience domestic violence because the violator feels the need to show that he is the boss of the house. The father who has been battling self-esteem issues all his life regularly violates his family to convince himself that he is the boss of the house. This might be because that person has never been in a position of power all his life and has been regularly put down by society. This person will most likely have difficulty coping with stress, be unwilling to take responsibility of his own actions and experience extreme jealousy and possessiveness among other alcohol/tobacco/drug problems (Domestic Violence). People who believe in God tend to stay away from evil thoughts and doings. Domestic violence is mostly taking place in homes that are without God’s guidance. Most religions around the globe are against any type of violence. The Bible, for example, encourages its followers to be at peace with all mankind (All About Life Challenges n. d. ). Homes where domestic violence occurs have very little or no faith in God. Islam is known as one of the most peaceful religions in the world. The Quran, which is the holy book of Muslims, preaches that conflicts should be solved using communication rather than violent actions. Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism and many more religions follow the same code of ethics. When child abuse occurs there is obviously an absence of religion in the home. For the counter argument, domestic violence does occur in homes rued with financial crises. According to a recent survey, domestic violence has been more prevalent in low-income families compared to middle and upper class families. Experts state that there tend to be more abuse cases in poor families that are reported to ER staff, police and social services. Violators from the lower class are more likely to be apprehended by the authorities because they do not have the power or influence which is prevalent in the upper class families (Domestic Violence Tips). To conclude this essay I would like to state that domestic violence does occur in areas affected by poverty, but that is not the only factor which contributes to this violence. Domestic violence is prevalent in families that are ridden with alcohol and drug abuse problems. A family which has a history of self-esteem issues is also extremely prone to domestic abuse because they tend to feel inferior among the other members of the family whether in economic, education or status prospect. Children who grew up in a family or community with history of abuse may think that violence is a reasonable way to solve conflicts between people. The other reason why domestic violence is on a rise is because of the absence of God in certain households. Lady Lazarus by Sylvia Plath Analysis In Lady Lazarus by Sylvia Plath, there are many different poetic devices that are chose to portray the speakers tone. Throughout the poem, the speaker seems to be talking about death at a glance it seems like she is happy with the though of death. But if we dissect the literary elements that Plath uses we can see that death is far from a happy topic, it is disastrous to her. The speakers tone throughout the poem tells us how depressed she is about the entire idea of death. Plath uses diction, images, sounds and repetition to set up the foundation of the poem. The choice of words used throughout this poem helps portray the tone. The images that are described through the speakers experiences on death show her emotions about death. These events give a vivid description which helps us understand her attitude towards death. The repetition and sounds set a certain mood and stress on some important aspects of death. Through these literary methods it helps the reader get a better understandi ng of Plaths true feelings towards death. Also, there are words that describe actions taking place when death attempts occur. For example, annihilate (24), The peanut-crunching crowd / Shoves in to see (26-27), I rocked shut (39) and That knocks me out (56) shows negative action towards death. First of all, annihilate means to destroy, which gives a downbeat connotation towards the tone of the poem. Then, the crowd refers to the others and their discouragement in this womans life, which leads to disappointment and an unconstructive tone towards death in the poem. Then the last two examples describe the speakers feelings towards a hopeless end to life. This type of diction used to accentuate the tone of the poem further supports the pessimistic nature. Lastly, another use of diction in Plaths poem is words associated with death and therefore, internally affect the tone of the poem. First, in line fourteen they use the word vanish which means to go away and never come back. This word is directly related to what death means and in using this word suggests that there is death involved in this particular poem, and the attitude towards it is not positive. Also, with the use of words like this explain why there is a lot of animosity towards death and the activities that support it, Soon, soon the flesh / The grave cave. These connotations in this poem talk and discuss death in general. The key words in this example that show death is flesh and grave cave. Normally, people do not talk about flesh unless they are discussing the skin of a dead person. Then, in the next line choosing the words grave cave shows again the horrible connotation towards death because that describes where people lay in peace, when they have passed away. Again show ing what she knows and wants when she dies is expressed by her fears signified by the connotation of the cave. The cave indicates a hiding place or somewhere to go and get away or hide from ones problems. Lastly, I do it so it feels like hell (46) point outs very clearly her approach towards death and with the use of the word, hell viewing the connections of her wants in pain, both in the present and in the future. This line indicates that hatred towards her life and others influences in general depicts her depressing tone of the poem. This also, correlates to her boring and lonely life she lives. This is why diction is a very essential tool that Plath uses to show her emotional journey of death and her attitude towards it. As shown through many different word choices it expresses her true feelings towards this issue and the down, depressing tone that she has on death. As examples show, diction is one of the most essential poetic devises that Plath uses to enhance the attitude and tone of the poem. In addition to diction, imagery is another poetic devise that Plath applies to the context of the poem to augment the miserable tone. Through many of these images it vividly describes an event that associates with death. The first disturbing image that Plath brings into play is a description of her skin, my skin / Bright as a Nazi lampshade. This picture described correlates to the Nazis and how they used the skins of Jewish victims to make lampshades. This type of description defiantly shows vividly that the tone of the poem is far from joy and happiness. Another negative connotation to Jews is A paperweight, / My face a featureless, fine / Jew linen (7-9). This image again shows the ugliness of this woman and how she views herself, which suggests the down and revolting tone the speaker has towards life and death. Another description of the face that ne gatively describes the speaker, which in turn helps to determine the feeling of the tone, is The nose, the eye pits, the full set of teeth? / The sour breath (13-14). These features of the womans face described here are those of someone who is sick, dying or dead. When reading these lines, the images that come into mind are disgusting and disturbing, which support and emphasize the horrible tone throughout the poem. Next, there are other types of images that show and describe other peoples reactions or interpretations of death and dying. What a million filaments / The peanut-crunching crowd (25-26) illustrate the audience and peers interpretations of the woman. The image of the filaments represents a thin line that burns out easily, and compares to the womans life, which is a thin string holding on. Then how she explains her life being short clarifies the awful tone she portrays. In addition, the crowd is an image that there are many people watching her go through her terrible life and struggling journey, and they are just there to watch not to help or participate in any way, like a crowd at a baseball game eating peanuts. This loss of caring towards the woman emphasizes again, the attitude towards death. Another use of imagery in this poem that Plath uses to give emphasis is an image that occurs after an attempt to one of her suicides, And picks the worms off me like sticky pearls (42). This di sturbing image shows and expresses the mood towards death in this poem. These words are so descriptive that they make a huge impact on the reader, which can make them cringe or feel uncomfortable. Those types of feelings that the reader may think of or sense supports the reasoning tone of the poem. Next, another image that supports the tone creates scenery after someone has been burned or cremated, Ash, ash- / You poke and stir. / Flesh, bone, there is nothing there- (73-75). Depicting this image are words that are only used when talking about death in a negative way. For example, flesh and bone are descriptions of the body, but when someone is alive they dont describe their body as flesh and bone. Using this type of diction and imagery shows the impact that it has on the deathly attitude of the tone. Lastly, the image that Plath uses to sum up the poem correlates back to the title. Out of the ash / I rise with my red hair / And I eat men like air (83-85), explains the rising of her death because of her multiple failures with suicide. Then in the last line she describes the image of eating the air, which explains her hatred for men, as well as life, but she continues to have to live and breath both the air of men and life. These images that describe death events, and other influences and reactions towards death are shown throughout the poem. Finally, in addition to diction and images, the last poetic devices that Plath utilizes to accentuate the attitude towards death are rhyme and sounds. Plath makes use of rhyme, sound and repetition to reiterate the points and the messages that she is trying to get across. For example, in lines 45 through 48, I do it exceptionally well. Lastly, the repetition of the word Beware (80) implies that there is fear and no reassurance that there is any positive connotation to these words. Therefore, all of this repetition and sounds that are used express and dramatically show the bitter tone of the speaker through her attitude. In conclusion, Plaths exercises various poetic devises that emphasize the attitude towards death by the speaker. Diction as a poetic devise shows though the choices that Plath makes in the selection of her words to depict the unenthusiastic tone of the poem. Then, the next poetic devise used is imagery, which was the most affective devise because of the vivid images the audience can imagine in their own minds. This approach also represents the depressing attitude and tone towards death. Lastly, the sounds and repetition are also used to show and express the downing aspects of the poem, including the tone and the attitude of the speaker. All together they make up just some of the important poetic devises that are being used in this poem that can analyze the speakers attitude towards death, which clearly is deadly.

CHAPTER I THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND INTRODUCTION Teachers play a vital role in building a nation. They are arguably one of the most important groups of professionals for our nation’s future. It is disturbing to find out that many of today’s unsung heroes like teachers are dissatisfied with their jobs. Ask anyone in the street how to motivate teachers and they will blatantly answer to increase their salaries. Ask what factors might have created dissatisfaction among teachers and probably they will enumerate factors like behavior of students, class size, curriculum, and the government policies in education.According to Herzberg Motivation-Hygiene Theory, the factors causing satisfaction are different from those causing dissatisfaction, the two feelings cannot simply be treated as opposites of one another. The opposite of satisfaction is not dissatisfaction, but rather, no satisfaction. Similarly, the opposite of dissatisfaction is nodissatisfaction. While at first gl ance this distinction between the two opposites may sound like a play on words, Herzberg argued that there are two distinct human needs portrayed.First, there are physiological needs that can be fulfilled by money, for example, to purchase food and shelter. Second, there is the psychological need to achieve and grow, and this need is fulfilled by activities that cause one to grow. Many factors have been examined in an attempt to find which one promotes motivation. HYPOTHESIS The following null hypothesis was formulated and tested at 0. 05 levels of significance: 1. THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK Theories of job satisfaction included discrepancy theory(Locke, 1969), equity theory (Mowday, 1992) and the motivator-hygiene theory (Herzberg, Mauser and Snyderman , 1959). The discrepancy theory was the result of the difference between an actual outcome a person receive and some other expected outcome level which may cause job satisfaction/ dissatisfaction. (Lawler, 1973).Inputs and outputs were the basis of the equity theory. Employees evaluated their inputs/outputs by comparing them with that of other individuals. Equity existed if the ratio of the inputs and outputs was similar to the inputs and outputs of other workers. Conversely, there is inequity if the ratio of the inputs and outputs was unequal to the inputs and outputs of other individual. Equity were associated with job satisfaction while inequity with job dissatisfaction (Mowday, 1992). This study is anchored on the two-factor theory of Herzberg.Herzberg, Mauser and Snyderman (1959) pointed out that job satisfaction is not a unidimensional concept but that is composed of two independent factors: 1. Motivational factors itself can lead to job satisfaction; 2. Maintenance factors (hyg iene factors) must be sufficiently present in order for motivational factors to come into play and when not sufficiently present can block motivation and can lead to job dissatisfaction. The five factors that facilitate job satisfaction were achievement, recognition, work itself, responsibility, and advancement. The factors identified as determinants of job dissatisfaction were policy and administration, supervision, salary, interpersonal relations and working conditions.Herzberg reasoned that because the factors causing satisfaction are differen t from those causing dissatisfaction, the two feelings cannot simply be treated as opposites of one another. The opposite of satisfaction is not dissatisfaction, but rather, no satisfaction. Similarly, the opposite of dissatisfaction is no dissatisfaction. While at first glance this distinction between the two opposites may sound like a play on words, Herzberg argued that there are two distinct human needs portrayed. First, there are physiological needs that can be fulfilled by money, for example, to purchase food and shelter.Second, there is the psychological need to achieve and grow, and this need is fulfilled by activities that cause one to grow. CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK The conceptual framework of the study was based on Herzberg two factor theory, also known as the Motivator-Hygiene Theory which focuses on the factors that affect the job performance of faculty members of Universidad De Manila. The hygiene factors are related to the environment external to the job. The environment in cludes interpersonal relations with others, policy and administrations, salary, supervision and working conditions.Many persons who feel dissatisfied draw their dissatisfaction to conditions surrounding their jobs rather than work itself. The other category is the motivating factors, which are found to be effective in motivating people in superior performance. These factors include achievements, growth, recognition, responsibility and work itself. All of these should be working together, to complement and supplement one another. The basic requirement should be provided to the workers as well as the challenge to perform to the maximum capacity and stimulate them to grow to the peak of their performance.This research determined what people or faculty member in particular actually want and what factors made them perform better or lesser on their respective field of teaching. This study would enable government officials to look into the plight of the faculty members and how they could plan programs and guidelines to improve the life and working conditions of the faculty members of Universidad De Manila. Administrators. The result of this study will be beneficial to the Administrators of Universidad De Manila because it could help them in analysing and identifying the factors that affect the job performance of the faculty members of Universidad De Manila that could possibly guide them in their pursuit of academic excellence.Facul ty Members. The outcome of this study is for the improvement of the quality of life of every faculty member of Universidad De Manila. This will enable them to realize their true value and worth as an educator and envoy of knowledge. Students. The outcome of this study will help the students, since they will be the principal recipient of the enhanced job performance of the faculty members. It will aid them in understanding and appreciating their teachers. Future Researchers. The result of this study could serve as a source of secondary information to future researchers.It may provide them a clearer view of the factors that affect the job performance of faculty members. SCOPE AND LIMITATION This study is limited to the motivating and hygiene factors that affect the job performance of Universidad De Manila. The focus of the study is limited to the motivating and hygiene factors that may possibly influence or affect the job performance of the faculty members of Universidad De Manila. Th e target respondents are one hundred faculty members (100), 100 survey questionnaires were given but only 60 was retrieved for the reason that some faculty members are not available at the time of data gathering.This studycovered the direct association of the variate motivating and hygiene factors with the criterion variable job performance. The direct association of the other factors such as age, sex, civil status, academic rank and length of years employed in Universidad De Manila with the variate and criterion variable were sought. DEFINITION OF TERMS The following terms are operationally defined for clearer and better understanding of the study: Age – this refers to entitled period of life or existence as a person.Civil Status – the indicators of this concept are 1) single 2) married Academic Rank – the level of position of faculty members. Motivating Factors – these are the factors that intrinsic in nature and are essential for employees fulfilment. These include achievements, growth, recognition, responsibility, and work Itself. Hygiene Factors – these are the factors that are extrinsic in nature and can be a great deal for achieving organizational objective. These include interpersonal relations, policy and administration, salary, supervision, and working conditions.Job Performance – refers to the quantity and quality of tasks performed by faculty members of Universidad De Manila. Job Satisfaction – set of favourable and unfavourable feelings with which employuees view their work. Behavior Of Students – attitude or manner of students that affects the performance of the teachers. Class Size – number of students per class. Curriculum – list of subjects that serve as guide to students as they pursue their respective degrees. In general, it has been found that context seems to be the most powerful predictor of overall satisfaction. However, given that most of the international studies on teacher satisfaction have been conducted in developed countries, one realizes the need in the available literature for similar research in developing countries as well.This paper examines job satisfaction and motivation among teachers in Cyprus – a small developing country in the Eastern Mediterranean. An adapted version of the questionnaire developed by the â€Å"Teacher 2000 Project† was translated into Greek and used for the purposes of this study that had a sample of 461 K-12 teachers and administrators. The findings showed that, unlike other countries in which this questionnaire was used, Cypriot teachers chose this career because of the salary, the hours, and the holidays associated with this profession. (Kessuwan* and Muenjohn†  2010) The results suggested that the employees had a moderate level of job satisfaction with the whole job situations (overall job satisfaction).With a closer look, it indicated that the highest satisfaction occurred in the areas of the work itself, supervision, and coworkers. The employees were highly satisfied with the work i tself because they found that their job was interesting, challenging, and enjoyable and had enough authority and freedom to perform their job. Supervision also made employees were highly satisfied because of the high competency in doing job of supervisor and the good encouragement, opportunity to express opinions, support, fairness, and interest in the feelings of subordinates provided by supervisor.The employees were also highly satisfied with coworkers because their coworkers were highly competent in doing their job. They received good cooperation and supports form their coworkers and there were no bickering and fighting at work. However, the employees were moderately satisfied with other worked-related variables, including pay, fringe benefits, opportunity for advancement, contingent rewards, and communication. Asking from the employees perspectives, it appeared that the employees rated pay as the most important factor influencing their job satisfaction followed by fringe benefit s and coworkers.However, the employees at the managerial and non-managerial levels perceived different degrees of importance. The non-managerial employees perceived pay, fringe benefits and coworker as the most three important would be because these motivational factors could fulfill their basic needs according to the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs (Moorhead and Griffin, 1998). On the other hand, the employees at the managerial level rated coworkers, opportunity for advancement, and work itself as the most important factor influencing their job satisfaction.This might be because a good work group or effective team could easily helped them achieved the best results. Similarly, the work itself allowed them to apply their abilities and skills and embody a diversity of tasks, freedom, and performance feedback. Regarding the relationships between the personal variables of the employees and their job satisfaction, it appeared that there were very little relationships between these two variables. The current research was conducted within one multinational company and therefore would not represent employee’s attitude for the whole industry.Also, theories in motivation and job satisfaction proposed a number of factors affecting employee job satisfaction but only eight work-related factors were identified in this study. Finally, quantitative research was employed to assess employees attitude toward their job in the current study. A number of researchers suggested qualitative research should be considered to get an in-depth attitude from respondents. This study is related to the present study because it discusses about the theories in motivation and job satisfaction and how it affects each other, which gave the researcher insights in the conceptualization of this study.LOCAL STUDIES A study on the human factors of the employees in the Greater Manila Area was conducted by Donato. She found out that age, employment status, educational attainment, income, marital status, and working experiences affected the job performance of employees. Better employment, attainment of a higher academic degree, greater income, successful marital relations, and growth professional experience tend to increase one’s satisfaction in life. She also found out that the employees were more satisfied than the government employees in spite of the difference of the privileges in favour of the private employees.This study is related to the present study because it showed how age, employment status, educational attainment, income, marital status and working experiences affect the job performance of employees. It also shows that government employees were more satisfied than the private employees in spite of the difference in the privileges, which gave the researcher insights in the conceptualization of this study. According to Manabat studied the sources of job satisfaction of supervision in selected industrial firms in Metro Manila, as theorized by Herzberg.The f indings of this study showed that achievement, advancement, recognition, and responsibility were three manifested major sources of satisfaction of middle managers and interpersonal relations with superiors. Failure to gain recognition, company policy, and administration were the major sources of dissatisfactions. This study is related to the present study because it elaborates that achievement, advancement, recognition and responsibility were the major sources of satisfaction,which gave the researcher insights in the conceptualization of this study.Quitlong, in her study, found out that the demographic characteristics such as civil status, job status, eligibility, position, educational attainment, income, and length of service; problems; attitudes; and morale did not show significant relationship with their job satisfaction. This study is related to the present study because it identifies the factors that has no significant relationship in the job satisfaction and job performance su ch as civil status, job status, et. al. , which gave the researcher insights in the conceptualization of this study.Villanueva, in his study of job commitment and satisfaction of technology and home economics teachers in selected secondary schools in the division of city schools, manila, found out that teachers are committed on their job and they are performing what is expected of them to the best of their ability. They also believed that they maximize the utilization of school resources, maximize the use of time and submit reports promptly. They claim to have adopted different measures to improve their teaching competencies and see to it that their class met the minimum, if not the maximum standard of instruction.They complied with the requests of their superiors and were willing to accept additional responsibilities when requested to do so. This study is related to the present study because it classifies the perceptual assessment of teachers in relation to their job satisfaction a nd commitment, which gave the researcher insights in the conceptualization of this study. RELATED LITERATURE According to Kant and Rozenweig, highly motivated individualsgenerally make better workers, achievers and implementors. Their performance greatly depends upon the satisfaction of their needs, wants and climate.This is related to the present study insofar as motivating factors are concerned. It explains that highly motivated individual generally makes a better workers, achievers and implementors, And that performance greatly depends upon the satisfaction of the needs wants and climate which the present study had sought in this present study. Jean Piaget’s theory of environmentalism which she related to effectivity. She said that â€Å"to be an educator implies a fundamental belief of environmentalism. The educator must be an environmentalist.It is through the environment that the most fundamental educational process-learning takes place within the child but is influenc ed by some of the values, attitudes and beliefs of educators in the particular organization. Educators must try to influence the learning process by providing the appropriate climate needs. † This theory of Piaget is somewhat related to the present study because in this theory of environmentalism, teachers is the subject implied, and the present study discusses about the motivating and hygiene factors in relation to job performance of Universidad De Manila Faculty Members.Both used teachers or educators as their subject. Quinn, Robert in his â€Å"Quality of Employment Survey† stated that the quality of work environment determines to a large extent of satisfaction of the people. It would be high when certain specific dimension of satisfaction exist, such as financial reward, comfort, challenge, resource adequacy and harmonious relations with co-workers. This is related to the present study because it discussed about the quality of work environment is the determinant of the extent of work satisfaction of the people.Ramoso in his study on motivational factors affecting performance to teachers in Carmen, Nasipit and Buenavista Districts of the Division of Agusan de Norte. She found out that the most favored motivational factors related to the quality of teachers’ performance were principal’s trust, production emphasis and morale. She said that when teachers felt their school administrators have trust and confidence in them, they were motivated to exert effort thus providing improving the quality of their performance.This is related to the present study because the motivational factors affecting teachers were discussed as well as the quality of teacher’s performance. Ramoso specified the factors affecting the performance of teachers in Carmen, Nasipit and Buenavista Districts of Agusan Del Norte. Joseph Reitz stated that as workers grow older, they tend to be slightly more satisfied with their jobs. This is due to a number of reas ons such as lower expectations and better adjustment to their work situation because of their experience with it.Younger workers tend to be less satisfied because of higher expectations and less adjustment. This is somewhat related to the present study because it deals with the workers satisfaction. The reasons of their satisfaction were also specified. Deci mentioned that people hold positive attitude toward their organization and they experience a high level of job satisfaction when the organization provides them with rewards which they desire. He further assumed that satisfied workers will perform better than unsatisfied workers. He further suggested that satisfying workers is an effective means of motivating them.This is related to the present study because it talk over that people hold a positive attitude toward their organization and they experience a high level of job satisfaction when the organization provides them with rewards which they desire. It was also assumed that sat isfied workers will perform better than the unsatisfied one. Gil stated that the poorer the attitude a teacher has towards his profession, the more unsatisfactory will be his teaching performance. This is related to the present study insofar as attitude has a relationship to one’s performance at work.However, this study has a different setting and it involves elementary school teachers, while the present study has its focus on college professors. In a research that was undertaken by Tsai Min Yen, a teacher. She found out the relationship between job performance and personality traits of faculty members of Nan Tai College of Commerce and Technology. She found out that faculty members performed satisfactorily with various activities related to school work such as administration, organization, consultative and guidance.She further concluded that the satisfaction a faculty member feels in his job is substantially influenced by his personality traits. This is related to the presen t study because it talks about the relationship between job performance and personality traits of faculty members which this present study has also been discussing. This research had concluded that the job satisfaction a faculty feels in his job is substantially influenced by his personality traits. Myers pointed out that motivation tends to be related to the kind of supervisor relationship experienced.He suggests that if a school superintendent develops good interpersonal relationship, the principal in the school system will tend to be more highly motivated. The interpersonal relationships which promote high motivation in a school organization are those which are work-oriented and which free individuals to become self-actualized in their work. This is related in the present study because it pointed out that motivation tends to be related to the kind of supervisor relationship experienced. Myers also suggested that if a school superintendent develops good nterpersonal relationship, the principal in the school system will tend to be more highly motivated. Penley and Hawkins showed that a supervisors receptiveness or willingness to listen to subordinates ideas, problems and concerns will improve the motivation of subordinates. Though such receptiveness, supervisors develop knowledge of areas in which they need to provide additional training or explanation in order to build expectancy that the workers can perform tasks. When employees have a sense of mastery and reward in their jobs, they perform better.This is related to the present study because it showed that a supervisor s receptiveness or willingness to listen to subordinates ideas, problems and concerns will improve the motivation of subordinates. Chapter III METHODOLOGY This chapter discusses the research design used in the study, samples and sampling techniques, instrumentation, data gathering procedures, and statistical treatment of data gathered by the researcher. RESEARCH DESIGN Any scientific process begins with description of an event or events from which theories may be developed to explain phenomenon.In this study, the researcher will use the descriptive research design since this involves observation and description of the behavior of the teaching personnel at Universidad De Manila. Under this design, a descriptive – correlational method will be employed in anylizing the data that will be collected through survey questionnaire. According to Calderon (1993:62), descriptive research is a purposive method of gathering, analysing, classifying, and tabulating data about prevailing conditions or situation.Similarly, Aquino (1992:3) describes descriptive method of research as a process of systematically describing a situation or area of interest factually and accurately. It gives a clear statement of what is existing at the present understanding. Correlation studies are based on quantitative measures on two or more variables. Since the study is correlational in nature, the s tatistical relationship between the level of motivation and the level job satisfaction will be looked into and it give an indication of how one variable may predict the other.However,  the correlation of the variables does not imply causation; that is, simply because two events are in some way correlated (related) does not mean that one necessarily causes the other. SAMPLE AND SAMPLING TECHNIQUES In determining the sample of the study, the researcher will be using a non-probability sampling technique specifically the purposive sampling. Purposive Sampling, according to Blay(2005:12) is a process of choosing the respondents based on the criteria set by the researcher. With this type, the sample is â€Å"hand-picked† for the research.Using purposive sampling allows the researcher to home in on people or events, which have good grounds in what they believe, will be critical for the research. In this study, respondents will be selected in terms of their status in the University . The researcher’s respondents of this study will be the teaching personnel of the Universidad De Manila. The variables that would be measured in the profile of the respondents consists of age, gender, civil status, civil status, number of years employed at UDM and status or academic rank. In determining the level of motivation and level of job satisfaction of the respondents the researcher will use a questionnaire adapted from the study of Jesse F. Seegmiller entitled â€Å"job Satisfaction of Faculty and Staff at the College of Eastern Utah†.The questionnaire consists of the Fac ulty Job Satisfaction/Dissatisfaction scale (Seegmiller,1977) which assessed the dimensions of the Herzberg motivator – hygiene theory. This section consisted of a 51-item five points Likert scale with responses varying from 1 (very dissatisfied) to 5 (very satisfied) which is categorized into three parts – the motivator factors, hygiene factors and the overall job satisfaction. DATA GATHERING PROCEDURES The researcher will ask the permission of the Vice President for Academic Affairs for the conduct of the study.After securing permit, the questionnaires will be distributed to the selected faculty members and the data obtained will be treated statistically using the percentage, mean, standard deviation and the Pearson Correlation Coefficient. The frequency distribution and the percentage will be used to describe the demographic profile of the respondents while the mean and the standard deviation will be used for the overall job satisfaction and the level of job satisfa ction in terms of the job motivator factors and job hygiene factors.In order to establish the significant relationship between the variables of the study, Pearson correlation coefficient will be computed. Also, the researcher will determine if the relationships among the factors are significant and the t test will be computed at 0. 05 levels with a degree of freedom of n1+n2 – 2. STATISTICAL TREATMENT The following are the statistical tools the researcher will be using in the study: 1. The Frequency Counts and Percentages In answering question number 1 of the statement of the problem, the researcher will make use of the frequency count and simple percentage to describe the respondents’ profile. 2.The Weighted Mean. Since the adapted questionnaire is a Likert Scale form, it is deemed proper to describe variables such as level of job satisfaction and level of motivation in terms of a single value that would described the whole set of data and that value is the weighted m ean. The weighted points for each item will be obtained by multiplying the scale value of the responses and the total number of respondents indicating it. The total weighted points is the sum of all the points for each scale value. Weighted mean of each item will be computed by dividing the total weighted point by the total number of responses as shown in the formula: W.M = S V x TWPN Where: SV = Scale Value TWP = Total Weighted Points N = Total Number of respondents 3. In order to find out the relationships of the level of motivation to the level of job satisfaction, the Pearson Correlation Coefficient, r, will be utilized by the researcher. A correlation is a number between -1 and +1 that measures the degree of association between two variables (level of motivation and level of job satisfaction). A positive value for the correlation implies a positive association A negative value for the correlation implies a negative or inverse association.Below is the interpretation of the corre lation coefficient that the researcher will use, -1. 0 to -0. 7 strong negative association. -0. 7 to -0. 3 weak negative association. -0. 3 to +0. 3 little or no association. +0. 3 to +0. 7 weak positive association. +0. 7 to +1. 0 strong positive association. The correlation coefficient will be computed using the formula The variables X and Y will refer to the level of motivation and level of job satisfaction, with mean XBAR and YBAR respectively and standard deviations SX  and SY  respectively. To tell whether or not the relationship is significant, the value of r will be tested at 0. 5 level of significance. As to the profile, the table reveals the chi-square value for the age of the respondents as 0. 488 which is insignificant at 0. 05 level of probability, thus the null hypothesis is accepted.There is no significant relationship between age of the respondents and the performance of the respondents. As to gender, the p-value is 0. 382 which is insignificant, thus the null hypothesis is accepted. This means that in terms of Gender, there is no significant relationship between the gender and the job performance of the respondents. Marital status, as revealed by the table, is not significantly related to the job performance of the respondents which has a p-value of 0. 393. The status of employment is not significantly related to the job performance of the respondents as shown in the above table, the p value of 0. 43 is insignificant at 0. 05 level. Lastly, as to the length of service at UDM, the computed p-value of 0. 213 is insignificant at 0. 05 level of significance, thus the null hypothesis is accepted. There is no significant relationship between the length of service and job performance of the teaching personnel of Universidad De Manila. 5.
